Artist Statement

I explore ideas of maximalism and femininity as I look at mundane objects from our daily lives. I construct alternative narratives based on well known pieces of literature or by retaining only a selection of images that appeal to me aesthetically. From the imagery and collection of physical objects, I get to examine and dissect them by shape and color, informing my design process. I think there is a lack of youthfulness and playfulness in the adult market. I challenge this with plenty of color, texture and print. My design creates new stories told on the body by the placement of colors. Through hand generated print and tactile forms, my illustrative and painterly prints narrate a cluster of eclectic escapism. My penchant curiosity about objects from different eras, specifically the 30s through the 80s, strongly influences my work. I focus on the physical appearance of these objects, which I relate to the loss of certain crafts. I am just as intrigued by interiors of homes of the same period; from the wall to wall carpeting, to living room sunken sofas, to toilet seat coverings, ceramic tiles, and wallpaper. These nostalgic elements all find a place within my work. I seek a balance between tacky/ trashy and sophisticated/elegant by playing into a preppy and quirky style with a sense of humor. I explore this by clashing prints with recognizable silhouettes garnished by flourish. There is an obvious madness of glamour in my work. And I am trying to reinvent this idea of opulence all while referencing vintage furniture pieces, essentially finding an elegant dynamic between the two.
